SUSAN GEORGE OBITUARY

One of the most critical voices of the heterodox economic community is no longer with us.  Susan George, an independent scholar and activist, passed away peacefully on 14 February 2026, at the age of 91, surrounded by her family.

Susan George was an inspiring figure, relentlessly fighting for a real social, ecological and democratic transformation both as a scholar and as an activist.  She published many books and countless articles on corporate greed, on the colonialism of the ‘debt’ of the countries of the South, on the excesses of finance, on ecological disruption.

As an activist she worked closely both with global and with local initiatives against the powerful, be it in states and institutions or in multinationals.  As such, she became an important figure in many movements and organisations, including the TNI, Transnational Institute, which she helped found and was an Honorary President until her death.

Susan George will be missed by the heterodox economic community and by the many social movements she was involved with over her long and fruitful life.
